Slow
cooker recipes used to be relegated to only cooking saucy concoctions
of stew, soup and chili. Today, however, you can find all types of recipes
for the slow cooker. When considering whether to make slow cooker recipes,
consider the following:
• It is best to fill a slow cooker between one-half to two-thirds
of the way full. It is helpful to follow the slow cooker’s recipe
as to the size of slow cooker recommended.
• Time matters – slow cooker recipes often specify that
the ingredients can be cooked either on high or low. The time for high
is much shorter than the time for the low temperature.
• It is best to chop large pieces of meat into smaller chunks
or slices for safety in cooking. Some large cuts of meat tend to take
a long time to heat up in the center of the meat.
• Vegetables generally cook more slowly than meats. Unless slow
cooker recipes specifies differently, place the vegetables on the bottom
and around the outside of the crockery so that they will be in contact
with the heat.
